Home User IP Telephony: What Are The Advantages?

Companies and businesses across the country have been enjoying the benefits of utilising IP telephony for some time now. As VoIP Phone technology improves and progresses, LAN’s that were previously used only for the transmission of data are currently being converted to deal with all types of media (as part of the now standard internet protocol). And the same could be said of today’s modern family household’s. More of us are building our own local area networks at home, expanding our Internet access with high speed Broadband connections that deliver sufficient bandwidth for us to seriously consider converging our home network with voice over IP telephony.

Even if it’s possible and feasible for you to do, why would you want to do it? When you look at the services and costs offered by VoIP providers compared to traditional telephone systems companies, the reasons become obvious! First and foremost is the considerable financial advantage (often up to 60% cheaper) of talking using the Internet rather than conventional copper PSTN telephone lines. Let’s take long-distance calls for example, calls will be switched to landline’s once they’ve arrived at the destination, but before that will be routed over the Internet. This means that telephone companies see the calls as coming from a local source, and therefore will be charged at local rates. Admittedly if you’re crossing over to a mobile network, rates may increase, but they’re still likely to be much cheaper than any of the alternative options.

Of course you do need to invest in some type of VoIP Telephony equipment. This may come in the form of a VoIP or SIP Telephone - like a normal phone except it plugs straight into your router, LAN or LAN hub. Other supported options include Softphone applications that runs on your PC or an Analogue Telephone Adaptor (ATA) that will ‘convert’ your normal BT type phone into an IP phone.

In order for you to be able to use this technology fully, you’ll need and internet connection that exceeds 128 kpbs; this is because you’ll need your calls to be clear, whilst still giving you enough bandwith for your normal internet use. A home broadband connection is also seen as being ‘on’ continually, meaning you can make and receive calls without having to suffer frustrating delays.
