Introducing The Google Nexus S
December 2010 saw the release of the latest handset from Google, called the Nexus S. Whereas the previous Google branded handset, the Nexus One, was manufactured by HTC; the new S model is produced by the Korean manufacturer Samsung. Some critics have claimed that the Samsung Google Nexus S is just another model from the Samsung Galaxy range, though there are a number of features that make the Nexus S stand out from the crowd.
The Samsung Google Nexus S, to give it its full title, has a few tricks up its sleeve that sets it apart from all the other Android phones on the market today. The most important factor, aside from the neat design, is the fact that the Nexus S comes with the latest version of the popular Android operating system, version 2.3 or Gingerbread. To power this newest evolution of the Android OS is a super fast 1GHz Hummingbird central processing unit (CPU), and 512MB of random access memory (RAM).
Externally, what causes this handset to stand out from the crowd is the curvature that has been incorporated into the design. The glass screen has a minor concave curve which is supposed to help comfort during extended periods of call time. Other factors that make this phone particularly special are the Super AMOLED display which projects a resolution of 480 x 800 (or 235 ppi), an internal digital compass, an accelerometer, and a gyroscope.
It is fair to say that Google’s target, as with all smartphone manufacturers at the moment, is the Apple iPhone 4G. It is also fair to say that even with an updated OS, the Nexus S is still cowering in the shadow of the beastly 4G. From this collaboration we can see that Samsung have truly delivered a great piece of hardware combining a clever, individual, modern design with very capable internal specifications, but the other side of the partnership have not quite fulfilled their design brief. The Gingerbread software, although good, has just not made the leap that we were all hoping.
Ultimately the decision whether to splash money on Google’s newest handset is really down to your personal operating system tastes. Although the Gingerbread OS still has a few flaws, it is still a worthy contender against the iPhone 4G and quite easily the best Android phone available today.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 : The Basics Explained
If you are looking for an impressive and versatile smartphone for less than $250, Sony Ericsson’s newly released Xperia X8 could be the phone for you. It is modeled after the more expensive X10, but is much more straightforward and less costly. The Xperia X8 is arguably one of the most attractive Android phones on the market, with its main cosmetic downside being the plastic used on the back of the phone. It tends to cheapen the feel of the phone. Otherwise, it is designed as most Android phones, with the home, menu, and back keys located beneath the display. The top of the phone has the controls for power/lock functions, the 3.5mm audio connector, and the microUSB port; the left side is home to volume controls and the quick one-step camera function.
The battery life of the X8 is pretty respectable. You will be able to talk on a 3G network for up to 5 hours and 40 minutes. If you are using advanced apps, you will find that there is plenty of processor speed available, thanks to the 600MHz processor and 128MB of RAM. This should be enough firepower to tackle almost any request, though it does not match the blazing speed of the best Android phones.
The interface for the 3.2 megapixel camera on the back of the phone is simple and easy to understand, even the video camera. While flash or auto focus would have been nice features if included, the quality of the pictures and videos are well above par, especially when transferred to a computer.
Anyone who rushed out to purchase the X8 will be running the Android 1.6 operating system. However, subsequent productions of the smartphone will yield Android 2.1. (Anyone running the older version will be able to upgrade once available.) Of course, users will be able to customize the device with their choice of apps from the Android Market.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 has a very modern, stylish look that manages to be small yet remain fully functional. For the right market demographic, it provides all the services you could want. So who is the right market demographic? The phone is clearly designed to be affordable, and unfortunately, it seems Sony met this goal by going with reduced internet browsing ability. If you want a reliable phone at a good price and do not plan on doing much internet browsing, then this is a good choice.

You can store the keyboard away when not in use and just slide it out when you want it. This keeps the keyboard unit safe and compact, while and also preventing any buttons from being pushed when transporting the unit in a pocket or bag.
The build quality is as you would expect with Blackberrys, it is strong and able to stand up to hard use. The Torch feels much more solid than some of the earlier models, thanks to the extra millimeters in thickness added by the sliding keyboard. Some slider phones have weak slide mechanisms and become wobbly after a while, with the Blackberry Torch 9800 this isn’t an issue, the slider is as solid as the rest of the phone. You will seen all of the other features that you are used to seeing with smart phones and other Blackberry models, such as web surfing, Bluetooth capabilities and GPS. The 5MP camera can take great quality photos although doesn’t have a video recording function, which is odd for a new phone.
The Blackberry Torch has been successfully compared to the iPhone 4, giving it very positive reviews. If you are in the market for a smart phone, deciding between the two phones will not be easy, as they are both rich in features; in fact, the deciding factor could easily be whether or not you prefer the slide out keyboard.
AT&T have the sole rights to sell the Blackberry Torch 9800 with contract deals. However, this model can be unlocked for use with any other wireless carrier. The Blackberry is equipped with a SIM card by AT&T, so if you switch to a new carrier you will need to get a new SIM card. When replacing the SIM card, you will be asked to input an “unlock” code, which you should receive with the new card.
You can also request an unlock code from your wireless carrier, give them the IMEI number from your new Blackberry Torch and unlock your phone without changing the SIM card. To find this code just head to the device menu found in ‘device and status information’, give it to your provider and then receive the unlock code.

You also get a new Operating System with the iPhone 4, iOS4, which has some impressive new features compared to the old 3GS operating system. For a start, the capacity of your homescreens is increased with the addition of folders for all the similar icons you want to keep together. But probably the biggest attraction of iOS4 is the true multitasking it offers. It takes a bit to get used to, but once you do, you can now keep several apps open at the same time, and quickly and easily switch between them.
The media might have been quick to point out some of the initial flaws with the new iPhone 4, but this shouldn’t be allowed to overshadow the impressive improvements Apple have made to how their new iPhone looks and functions. New iPhone users will love the iPhone 4, and the only frustration for those who have a 3GS might be the length of time they have to wait before they can upgrade.

Battery life is greatly improved on the Optimus from previous LG smartphone models. A 1500mAh lithium-ion battery has been rated at 500 hours of life on standby and has been shown to provide up to 7 hours and 20 minutes of talk time. This is almost unheard of when it comes to smartphones. Of course, the LG Optimus comes packed with miscellaneous features that will please the user who is looking to enhance the smartphone experience. On the Optimus you will find an alarm clock, world clock, voice recorder, personal organizer, a dedicated Youtube plug-in, a PDF viewer, and scads of other handy applications. An entry-level Android phone, the LG Optimus affords ease of use that will not overwhelm new users.
