Ever Received A Subliminal Message?

Advertisements are shown to grab your attention and compel you to purchase a product. A desire can be stimulated that only registers in your subconscious mind. A subliminal message is not always present in all , and there is no way of discovering if an advertisement has a message concealed within it. Studies have proven that such hidden messages have the ability to affect individual behaviors. And in certain cases, sublimated messages have proven effective in enhancing memory. These messages can travel through a person’s reasoning ability and move straight into their subconscious mind.

It is believed that a subliminal message can be delivered either through visual or auditory means and can affect the subconscious mind in a neutral, positive or negative way. Sometimes these messages can affect later behaviors, thoughts, attitudes and feelings. It is true, in fact, that any type of sustained exposure to these messages or programming can have a very dramatic effect on a person’s entire value and belief system.

In 1959, a man named James Vicary carried out a study where messages were flashed across a movie screen. His claim that flashing the words “drink coke” and “eat popcorn” caused sales of the two products to raise significantly among the movie goers. His results were never duplicated by any other researchers and in fact, in his later years, Vicary admitted that he falsified his findings.

However true or untrue his findings turned out to be, the damage was already done. Subliminal had become exposed to the public psyche, and people were shocked at how easily the subconscious mind could be manipulated. Sublimated messages were later banned from television and radio by several countries and even investigated by the CIA.

Although his experiment was a fraud, Vicary spurred modern researchers to investigate this phenomenon of mind programming. Using the latest technologies, they have shown that these hidden messages can indeed influence subconscious thinking.

Whether you are watching a film or browsing the internet, humans are prone to respond to a subliminal message embedded in advertisements. Being aware of the scientific theory behind the practice and other tactics can help prevent people from falling into advertiser’s traps. Bringing the mind into control by making it aware of such subliminal advertisements is the only way of resisting.

Subliminal Advertising: A Mind Control?

You may have noticed that companies who manufacturer alcoholic beverages use beautiful women in bikinis as their primary models. Drunkenness seems to have a predictable relation to sex and provocation, so in many ways, these symbols have worked very well for the companies who utilize them and have increased their sales many times over. The same style of ad is used with cigarette advertisements. You may also notice that men and women are often seen passing a cigarette to someone, as if sharing the same addiction or vice. Both examples are used as part of subliminal .

A great example of sublimated messages can be seen in . The messages used in a visual medium are always masked by other things in the picture that seem to misdirect your attention. If, however, the image or word is pointed out, it becomes obvious. The same goes for audible subliminal messages. The voice that is speaking the commands is indistinguishable from background music or sounds. If the masking sounds are removed and the recording is left at the same volume, then the subliminal messages are easy to hear.

However, with the multitude of varied strategies today, television commercials are probably the last place where subliminal advertisements are used. Subliminal ads are a bit harder to find in newspapers and magazines, where the use of images has become the most popular way for companies to promote their products.

Although it is a common belief that subliminal communication cannot be heard or seen, this is false. They must be visible or audible in order to be effective. The affirmation only becomes sublimated because they are masked by other images or sounds. The reasons why subliminal works is because of the way the mind works. Although there are millions of stimuli that reach your senses every moment, your conscious mind is only aware of a very small amount. This is so that you are able to carry out your daily activities without constant interference.
